Surfer Mag Names SC a “Top 10 Surf Town”

THE LATEST: Surfer magazine named its top 10 surf towns in the country in its July 2009 issue, and San Clemente came in at No. 5. The selection criteria included quality of life, variety and quality of waves, climate, culture, cost of living, employment opportunities and the all important number of shark attacks. According to the magazine, San Clemente’s south Orange County location accounts for the abundant availability of waves, culture, great weather, and a very low “sharkiness” factor. The city’s reputation as a hot bed for developing surf talent and the subjective quality of “vibe” also contributed to its top 10 designation. The complete list: 1. Santa Cruz; 2. Haleiwa, Hawaii; 3. Encinitas; 4. Paia, Hawaii; 5. San Clemente; 6. Kill Devil Hills, N.C.; 7. Malibu; 8. Montauk, N.Y.; 9. New Smyrna Beach, Fla.; 10. Ocean City, N.J.

Wrong-way driver ditches car, takes off on foot

A man driving the wrong way on the I-5 freeway was arrested this morning after ditching his car and alarming a nearby neighborhood.

Calls from motorists began coming in at 3 a.m. when a man was seen driving a dark-colored Nissan northbound on the southbound I-5 near Avenida Vacquero, said California Highway Patrol officer Gabe Montoya.

The man then drove his car to the side of the freeway and left it there. Motorists then reported that the man was running on the freeway. According to additional calls to the CHP, the man then jumped the freeway divider and ran into a nearby neighborhood.

According to Montoya, an Orange County Sheriff patrol car had also spotted the man on the freeway and then chased him in the neighborhood. Neighbors alarmed by the man made additional calls to the CHP and the Sheriff's Department.
